WOOLOO IN THE 6TH MOMENTUM BIENNIAL

We just returned from the opening weekend of the Momentum Biennial, held in Moss, Norway. Wooloo was presenting our work "Two Years' Untouched Garden" - a proposal to leave the garden outside one of the main exhibition venues fallow for two years, from this biennial until the opening of the next in 2013.

However, the very thought of this experiment has caused intense debate and protests in local Norwegian media, which has now resulted in a political decision to ban our work.

The grass outside the historical villa at Gallery F15 will continue to be cut each Friday.

365 DAYS OF PRINT

365 Days Of Print is an ongoing Open Call with the goal of remixing the newspaper and engage in dialogue with diverse artistic mediums.

Over the course of 2011, 100+ artists will use the newspaper as fodder to illustrate, sew, draw, paint, sculpt and photograph. Sam Hickson, Holly Pitre, Peter Jacobs and Osvaldo Cibils are among the WOOLOO.ORG artists selected for participation so far.

We look forward to following the development of the project!

WOOLOO IN DAKAR

Wooloo just returned from Dakar, Senegal where we took part of the exhibition "Faites comme chez vous" at the newly opened Raw Material Company.

The exhibition explores issues of hospitality at an individual, institutional and national level, and touches touch upon themes of human migration, colonial heritage and international conflict.

Read more on the exhibition and this great new art institution at: http://rawmaterialcompany.org

SEAWORTHY

For those of you in New York on Friday, we strongly recommend the opening of SeaWorthy at the EFA Project Space in Manhattan.

SeaWorthy presents work by artists who employ the boat as a platform for collective action, private reflection and liberatory possibility. Among them are WOOLOO.ORG artists Mary Mattingly, Micheal Arcega, Rachel Bacon, Brindalyn Webster and Charles Westfall.

Congratulations! We are looking forward to the show.

FREE ACCOMODATION IN VENICE

As you might know, Wooloo was invited to participate in this year's 54th Venice Biennale by the Lebanese Pavilion. Despite the Pavilion's recent cancelation, we have decided to continue our project New Life Venice.

New Life Venice offers free accommodation to artists in need and our local Venetian hosts are accommodating artists exhibiting for the national pavilions of Albania, Lithuania, Haiti and Romania among others.

To those of you contacting us: No more calls and emails please - we are completely booked! Thank you for your interest and understanding.

THE AESTHETICS OF JOURNALISM

The latest issue of 12-Pages is Movement. The issue takes as its point of departure the act of 'carrying on' that New Order displayed in releasing their debut album Movement on 18 November 1981, 18 months to the day after the suicide of their talisman, Ian Curtis.

WOOLOO.ORG members Jeffrey B. Childs, Beverly Bennett and Charley Peters are among the artists selected from the Open Call.

NEW ISSUE OF 12-PAGES

For those of you in the UK over the summer, Wooloo recommends the upcoming show All that Fits: The Aesthetics of Journalism.

The show is curated by Manifesta 8 co-curator Alfredo Cramerotti and Simon Sheikh and puts forward the idea that art and journalism are not separate forms of communication. Rather, they are two sides of one unique activity: the production and distribution of information.

WOOLOOPICK WINNER

We are happy to announce Daniel Galas as the WoolooPick! Daniel got the majority of the public votes from WOOLOO.ORG members and visitors.

In his artistic practice, Daniel is mainly a painter, even though he also does work in other kinds of media. Among them a USP truck in paper-mache. He lives and works in Nyack, USA.

Wooloo spoke to Daniel about his work:

- How would you describe your artistic process?
Its like the Zen saying... "When sitting, just sit. When walking, just walk. Above all, don't wobble." Whether the drawing is "good" or "bad" it doesn't matter... but to second guess my intuition is to fail.

- Can you give us an example of a work of yours that you are especially happy with?
I'm most happy with my work when it reveals to me something unusual about myself and what I'm drawing. I hone in on something peculiar about a person, place, or thing and eliminate all other unessential information.

- What inspires you to create your work?
The infinite creative possibilities in visual art and the curiosity of being alive in the world.

- Has the Internet an effect on your practice as an artist? And if yes, in what way?
Yes. Because I am on the Internet so often, sitting in front of a computer screen, it has conversely given me the need to be more engaged with my immediate surroundings.

- How long have you been using WOOLOO.ORG and why do you find it useful?
I've been a member for one year. I absolutely love that it is international, free, and requires no submission to become a member!

WOOLOOPICK OF FEBRUARY

We are happy to announce Whitney Lynn as the WoolooPick of February 2011! Whitney got the majority of the public votes from WOOLOO.ORG users and visitors. Whitney Lynn is a multimedia artist who explores ideas of containment and the messy intersections between political, military, and civilian cultures. Whitney lives and works in San Francisco.

Wooloo spoke to Whitney about her work:

- How would you describe your artistic practice?
Although the physical structure of each project varies – installation, sculpture, photography, drawings, performance, video - I am interested in exploring aspects of containment, control, boundaries and messy intersections. Formally driving the work are sculptural issues of material, space, and the relationship to the body.

- Can you give us an example of a work of yours that you are especially happy with?
I'm always most excited about the piece that's coming up next.

- What inspires you to create your work?
The desire to get something out of my head and into physical space.

- Has the internet had an effect on your practice as an artist? And if yes, in what way?
Less slides, more emails.

- How long have you been using WOOLOO.ORG and why do you find I useful?
Five years? Great to have a platform to show new work/exhibitions.

WOOLOOPICK OF JANUARY

We are happy to announce Selena Marinello as the WoolooPick of January 2011! Selena got the majority of the public votes from WOOLOO.ORG users and visitors. She lives and works in San Diego, United States.

Wooloo spoke to Selena about her life and work.

- How would you describe your artistic practice?

Extremely messy, haphazard, and spontaneous. By the end of the art process I will have more medium covering myself than on the actual canvas, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I believe my art process to be something that is based mostly around the extreme self-criticism floating in my head as well, thus the eventual anarchy of my hands rebelling against all constraints and worries to create a master piece of messy dresses and leaving a “painty artist” in it’s wake.

- Can you give us an example of a work of yours that you are especially happy with?

Drawing the “Old Men” have been a bad habit of mine for a while and it’s an unfortunate happenstance that my father happened to draw something rather similar in his early 20s while away in the Peace Corps. I can’t really describe how I draw them, it’s like my hand wants to shit out a demon that’s been haunting my mind and these are the beings that it decides to create. I never end up drawing women, always men. I don’t ever really plan on drawing woman to be honest, it’s nothing against my own sex, I’m just tired of seeing naked women every where in art. Time for some penis.

- What inspires you to create your work?

Willpower to prove to myself that there is hope in the art world? I feel like there has been a lack of community within the realm of artists and it saddens me. I want to see a new “ism” I want to get contemporary art out of this temporary “contemporary” pluralism that it seems to be stuck in. I don’t know if I’m the right person to inspire a new revolution in art, but it’s high time this century of young artists made a mark in art history, and not just one based in technology. What that is...well I have no idea, but I feel like I’m getting close.

- Has the internet had an effect on your practice as an artist? And if yes, in what way?

I probably spend too much time hitting “random article” on Wikipedia.com and looking at more colleges to apply to more than worrying about how the internet will help me further my art career. However, this is probably what drives me the most: endless accessible knowledge that is constantly available. If I have ANY questions that randomly pop up in my head, Google will supply me with a variety of answers that I can choose from, depending on what I want to hear/read.

- How long have you been using WOOLOO.ORG and why do you find it useful?
-
I’ve been on WOOLOO.ORG for a couple months and the notifications for upcoming competitions or festivals has been really helpful in knowing what is out there, internationally. As mentioned before, I don’t think a new “ism” is going to be entirely based on technology, but I believe that technology and social networking will have a large part in a global movement. Art movements are no longer restrained to individual countries since the world is so intertwined with the amount of information available on the internet, thus making it easier for an international movement in the art world for young artists! Banish the idea of being individual with art and support the passion for art and creating aesthetic beauty globally.

- Do you have anything to add?

I’m extremely surprised and touched that I’ve won WoolooPick of the month and cannot express how entirely grateful I am to those that voted for me. My only hope for the art world is that it can once again be recognized as something that is federally important to each country and not seen as an “accessory” to education. I hope to inspire those that feel art, whatever form, is their true passion in life and that they pursue it without any regret.
